Tsumori Chisato was born in Japan and studied fashion design at the prestigious Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo. In 1977, she joined Issey Miyake as the head designer for Issey Sport, in 1983, that clothing line became I.S. Chisato Tsumori Design. In 1990, she started her own collection “Tsumori Chisato”
