John Arnold Griffin III

(April 24, 1928 - July 25, 2008)

US jazz tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, who played alongside such luminaries as Lionel Hampton, Art Blakey and Thelonius Monk, died Friday in France, his agent Helene Manfredi said. He was 80.
Nicknamed the Little Giant, Griffin was due to perform Friday evening alongside US organist Rhoda Scott, French saxophonist Olivier Temime and drummer Julie Saury.
Griffin died at home in Mauprevoir, a village in the west-central La Vienne district, where he had spent the last 18 years of his life. The cause of death was not disclosed.
After studying music at the DuSable High School in his native Chicago, Griffin joined vibes star Hampton's orchestra in 1945 before leaving with trumpeter Joe Morris to join the latter's own band.
Throughout the 1950s, he played with a variety of combos, including Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.
He also played alongside cornetist Nat Adderley and recorded with John Coltrane. The fruits of that collaboration produced the 1957 Blue Note album for which he is perhaps best remembered, "A Blowin' Session."
At the start of the 1960s, Griffin founded his own group along with another saxophone player, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, but in 1962 he decided to set up home in France.
A spell in the Netherlands followed in the 1970s, before his return to France, where he continued to record and tour right to the end.
Legendary London jazz club Ronnie Scott's described Griffin on its website as a "member of jazz's elite ... his burning solos and furiously nimble runs anchored by an amazingly well-informed and complete grasp of melody and harmony, marking him out as one of the greatest tenor sax players". (AFP)

He was the first Jazzmusician I really met and I was immediately captured by his absolutely amazing style and his cheeky grin. That day he wore a great dark hat, a very well tailored dark double breasted pin stripe suit and had a cane in his hand...very much like on the picture above. He was so incredibly cool and relaxed between all those busy people working at the festival office where he was...I was ravished by him!

Guerrilla gardening is political gardening, a form of nonviolent direct action, primarily practiced by environmentalists. It is related to land rights, land reform, and permaculture. Activists take over ("squat") an abandoned piece of land which they do not own to grow crops or plants. Guerrilla gardeners believe in re-considering land ownership in order to reclaim land from perceived neglect or misuse and assign a new purpose to it.
Of course some Guerrilla gardeners just want to make to city they live in a more beautiful place.

I like a lot of things about Philip Glass and his many collaborations with other artists certainly belong to those things. He worked with Fine art masters Richard Serra and Chuck Close, with Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, David Bowie and Ravi Shankar amongst others. Glass manages to always be Glass no matter with whom he works. Some people might misinterpret this as repeating himself but I don`t think it`s true. Having a distinctive sound isn`t repeating yourself and even if he would do...repetition is a major point in his music anyway.

SYNOPSIS:
Composed by Philip Glass and based on the poetry of Leonard Cohen, Book of Longing is a song cycle composed for ensemble, singers, spoken word and imagery. The culmination of years of mutual admiration between two of the most celebrated musical artists of their generation, the piece features new music by Philip Glass that is inspired by Cohen’s collection of poems and his artwork of the same name.

Composer’s Note:
"Leonard and I first began talking about a poetry and music collaboration more than six years ago. We met at that time in Los Angeles, and he had with him a manuscript that became the basis of the collection of poetry now published as the Book of Longing. In the course of an afternoon that stretched into the evening, he read virtually the whole book to me. I found the work intensely beautiful, personal, and inspiring. On the spot, I proposed an evening-length work of poetry, music, and image based on this work. Leonard liked my idea, and we agreed to begin. Now, six years later, our stars are in alignment, the book is published, and I have composed the music. For me, this work is both a departure from past work and a fulfillment of an artistic dream." "The artist and film maker Derek Jarman (1942−1994) is regarded as the most eminent representative of British independent cinema from the 1970ies to the 1990ies. In his strongly autobiographical work, film, painting, stage design, and text overlap to form an impressive gesamtkunstwerk of political impact. His works document socially explosive issues such as the punk movement, the protests against the Thatcher regime, the homosexuals’ fight for their rights, and the AIDS crisis.
The exhibition Derek Jarman. Brutal Beauty confronts Jarman’s extraordinary monochrome cinematic work Blue and a Super 8 film installation with paintings and assemblages partly never shown before. Made one year before Jarman’s death, Blue offers a moving portrait of the artist shortly before he was losing his sight. The screen does not alter during the 74 minutes of the film, which is to be read as a homage to the French painter Yves Klein.
Photographic lightbox works by Isaac Julien, curator of the exhibition and an important contemporary artist and film maker himself, convey an impression of Jarman’s famous Prospect Cottage and his garden in Dungeness, Kent. Above all Isaac Julien’s 2008 film Derek elucidates Derek Jarman’s life, art, and impending death. It is based on an interview with Jarman conducted by the author and producer Colin MacCabe; the film’s narrator is Jarman’s favorite actress Tilda Swinton."

Three Potato Four is run by Janet Morales & Stu Eli. They started the shop because of their love of collections. They're collectors, and to them, all products and belongings tell a story. Sometimes that story is about where the object came from, how it was made or who made it. Other times, it's a story about us and how the object reflects who we are, to ourselves and to others.Theye live by stories and they shop for stories.

They've always filled their home with things they love and think beautiful stories can be told through the complimentary mix of modern and vintage objects.

"Patricia Urquiola has an innate capacity to design objects with a strong connotation, which revolve around the upholstered families. A new look at the hammock style, presented at the Ideal House exhibition in Cologne; the ideal companion to the Smock armchair presented at last year’s Milan Furniture Show. It displays the same exploration of solids and voids, comfort and luxury, that distinguishes Urquiola’s work. This sophisticated, elegant sofa uses a light, stylised design centred around the draping over the ring-shaped armrests. The unusual feature of a full-length zip is for removing the cover and for joining different materials. The two rings have become arms, the objective lightness is maintained and transmitted by the slightly foamed shell. The small armchair stands on a slide or on a central tube. The particular feature is the smock stitch, embroidered at the sides, giving a luxurious and refined quality. Water comes out of faucet. the loose shoe lace you tie and untie. Very much an everyday situation, ought to be far from things like art / product design / fashion design. But once it is played on the stage of "white t-shirt" starring "black print", it leaps high up to art / product design / fashion design. Scenario is not difficult at all. Very naturally the collection communicates you the designers' intent, excitement and sense of fun.

"The exhibition puts the focus on a central theme of modern painting: abstraction. The timeline ranges from the pioneers of the modern movement including Claude Monet, Vassiliy Kandinsky, Kasimir Malevich, the exponents of Abstract Expressionism like Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning, and contemporary formations including such artists as Gerhard Richter, Brice Marden and Sean Scully. Various thematic skeins are woven into the structure of the exhibition concept, uniting criteria contingent to the history of development, style, technique and aesthetics. It will provide a view of elective affinities, traditions, analogies and differences between various artistic works of different generations and hence underline the elemental status and topicality of abstraction for painting.
In the final consequence, the step-by-step rejection of objective representation means the dissolution of the painting, its »death«. Although artists like Kasimir Malevich and Ad Reinhardt repeatedly sounded out the limits of painting and although the end of painting has always been prophesied, artists always found new possibilities and ways to develop non-representational painting: a rich spectrum of examples can be encountered off the tracks chosen by the radical intellectual and conceptual ascetic. After the end of the modern movement, abstraction breaks free from purist dogmas, strict aesthetic guidelines and utopian world models. Artists extended the concept of abstraction to attain more freedom for painting – often involving combinatiorics, quotation, or reflection of »nature«. The theme of the landscape is also a key aspect in the early history of abstraction, when the impressionists – despite all fidelity to reality – defined the panel painting as a planar colour field. With the abstract conception of his water lily pictures, Claude Monet logically functions in this exhibition as the father figure of the Abstract Landscape.The selection of works is concentrated on the sensitive power of »the painterly« within the classical square of the picture. Factors such as monochrome, texture, gesture, process orientation, colour field, geometry and construction play a superordinate role. Light will be cast on the spiritual and meditative aura of the abstract picture as well, also on conceptual criteria.International formations are presented in a dialogue with artists from Austria who work in the abstract style – including Erika Giovanna Klien, Arnulf Rainer, Maria Lassnig and Hubert Scheibl; this is moreover a way of testing the Austrian contributions for their significance outside their own region and tradition."

Designed and fabricated by California-based jewelry artist, Cara Tilker, the collection features nine different designs including earrings, pendants, bracelets, a ring, and cuff links.
Each piece incorporates actual historic fragments of Frank Lloyd Wright's landmark Guggenheim Museum, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2009. Lightweight concrete and Gunite remnants, set aside during the 2007 restoration process* from the building's walls, are presented in resin and sterling silver settings.

Bouquet: Sublime simplicity for this innovative, amazing design by Tokujin Yoshioka. “I got the idea for Bouquet from the installation I created last October for Moroso's New York showroom. I used about 30,000 paper tissues to recreate a cloud-like atmosphere. The Bouquet makes people who sit on it happy, just as a bouquet makes the person who receives it happy. The vibrant, delicate colours trigger different sensations in each of us.” The Bouquet chair "blooms" on a slim, chrome-metal stem that blossoms with white or delicately-coloured "petals" made of hand-folded fabric squares sewn one by one, with great care and infinite patience, to completely cover the internal surface of the egg-shaped, wrap-around shell. Tokujin Yoshioka, is a great “couturier” with a meticulous eye for detail, he is a designer whose delicate, poetic, elegant designs help us to dream. He likes to astonish us by producing surprising effects from simple, almost banal objects which he interprets and uses in an extraordinary way by means of his ability to see beyond and to reinterpret the world through the characteristic poetry and harmony of Japanese culture.

Little Garden is a metal table, in two heights, with a round top that rests on a circular section central support at the base of which a flower vase is inserted. Little Garden can be located both indoors and outdoors and can be used both in private dwellings as well as in contract projects. It is an apparently simple object but extremely complex in its balanced harmony, correct proportion of shape and material and its painstaking finishings. Poetry and magic in an object that is so simple yet at the same time so ingenious.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco have designed and developed, in partnership with the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent, the first retrospective spanning the forty years of creation of the Maison de haute couture Yves Saint Laurent. Presented from May 29 to September 28, 2008, the exhibition Yves Saint Laurent focusses on this virtuoso of haute couture, whose unique style blends references to the world of art with allusions to pop culture and social revolution. Structured around four themes, the exhibition develops the revolutionary nature of a body of work that has marked both the past and the present with a new definition of femininity and left a signature that transcends fashion. The display will include 145 accessorized creations belonging to the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent, as well as drawings and videos. After Montreal, the exhibition (which is the first co-production of these two museums) will be presented at the de Young Museum of San Francisco, from November 1, 2008, to March 1, 2009.
Yves Saint Laurent is famed for revolutionizing the haute-couture tradition and laying the foundations of modern women’s wear. The wardrobe basics that he designed – pantsuit, culotte skirt, pea coat, blazer, safari jacket and tuxedo – shone with his innovative style and became true timeless classics. His designs were equally remarkable, reflecting wide-ranging sources of inspiration. In Saint Laurent’s stylistic vocabulary, music, art, performance, literature and impressions of far-off places were just as important as the new shapes he introduced.

“Why present Yves Saint Laurent in Montreal? Quite simply because the work of one of the twentieth century’s greatest couturiers is a thing of great beauty. The poetry of each of his creations reflects this man’s incredible sensitivity and vast cultural knowledge. Every square inch of fabric is compelling… Experiencing haute couture up close cannot possibly be compared with viewing its image, which at times becomes hackneyed from its omnipresence in the media. Personally, I was blown away, if you will excuse the expression, when I first saw the storage areas of the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent, and I still am. Kudos to this young institution, a model of its kind! In my opinion, to offer all our visitors this ultimate fashion experience in the setting of a fine arts museum is perfectly justified, especially since our city (like the Museum’s multidisciplinary collections) supports creation, art and design in particular.
Another aspect of Yves Saint Laurent’s work that touches me is his desire to empower women day and night. He appropriated masculine codes of dress, creating a wardrobe for modern women who were stepping out of traditional roles. This was in stark contrast to the practice of depicting women as Barbie dolls designed to sell products. But above all, he idealized the beauty of all his models, whatever their ethnic background or the colour of their skin (he was the first to use a black model), and his inspiration was nourished by a beautiful soul. Exhibition Layout
The exhibition is divided into four main themes: “The Stroke of a Pencil” where the designer’s idea is followed from the original sketch; “The Yves Saint Laurent Revolution,” where feminized versions of men’s attire rub shoulders with seductive apparel; “The Palette,” which shows how traditional rules of colour harmony were reversed in new contrasts inspired by cross-fertilization; and “Lyrical Sources,” which explores the historical, literary (Marcel Proust, Oscar Wilde, Louis Aragon, Jean Cocteau…) and artistic influences that were interpreted and translated by this genius of couture. Throughout his career, Yves Saint Laurent examined the work of the great artists of our day, expressing his personal tastes and the paintings he admired by transforming painting into fabric. Some of his creations reflect the visual sensations of Impressionism, while others liberate the expressive power of some of the great names and movements of modern art: Mondrian and Poliakoff in 1965, the “Pop Art” dresses in 1966, Picasso in 1979 and Braque in 1988.

Publication
The exhibition catalogue features texts by Florence Müller and Hamish Bowles. Published in separate English and French editions by Abrams and the Éditions de La Martinière respectively, it distinguishes itself from previous publications devoted to Yves Saint Laurent through its presentation of little-known ensembles and numerous sketches, as well as detailed captions and an illustrated chronology. It includes photos by Alexandre Guirkinger that were shot especially for this publication.

The one pictured has a walnut veneer, yet the laminate and ultimately the extruded graphic are all customizable. Stink tree can be produced in a range of colors, textures and styles. If you're worrying about stuff falling through the cracks, so to speak, then don't use the table in a manner where things would get caught down there, and dont spill your drink, although a towel or dust brush can reach the crevices anyway. You can also fit it with a piece of glass if you're that worried.

Every year the Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture, the City of Vienna and Unit F büro für mode together with the Austrian daily newspaper "Die Presse" grant the AFA - Austria Fashion Awards to designers. An international, independent jury of industry experts will select the winners of each category.These awards come with a specific service package and, according to the professional experience of the applicants, target different levels. The respective award is supposed to fit in with the CV of the applicant and to support the development of further work. The AFA – Austria Fashion Awards’ call for entries is aimed exclusively at fashion designers with complete collections (no accessory or jewellery collections).In 2008 for the first time, the jury process will be divided into two parts:In March 2008 the international jury will nominate two finalists for every award from the submissions. At the show-presentation in the context of the 8 festival for fashion & photography, the AFA-winners will be named by the jury in attendance. With altogether award money of over EUR 45.000,00 these awards rank among the most important and most highly remunerated in the entire Austrian field of design.
